The Friends of Historic Riverside were pleased to receive the following notice from Jan Allen about an event she is hosting at Riverside on Saturday, June 18th and Sunday June 19th. Although we are not directly involved in planning this event, we are happy to support this opportunity to remember a great friend to Riverside and the community.

Hello Friends and acquaintances of Cliff Dougal,

Recently, a brass and granite grave marker was placed at Cliff”s burial site at Riverside Cemetery. You are cordially invited to join his friends and acquaintances for a celebration of his life and reminisce with the many people and children he knew.

Will we ever know all the projects in which he participated – his many times with his “children”, the good deeds he performed (Santa for 37 years), church activities, and especially his stories of his beloved Riverside Cemetery? (And probably some others I’ve never heard about!)

And speaking of any of his stories (especially of the cemetery), a booklet of them has been planned to be published for all to enjoy. We know of some stories that may have to be “adjusted” of happenings-especially after dark at the cemetery, but they are really entertaining. We want your contributions and will be collecting them at that time.** Bring your pens and pencils, paper will be furnished!

The dates are both Saturday, June 18th and Sunday, June 19th at 1pm at Riverside Cemetery. The event is being initiated by myself. All friends of Cliff”s are invited.

Please join me at Block 15 near the miniature chapel belonging to the Transfiguration Church.

I look forward to meeting every one that knew this kind and big hearted person.

Sincerely, Jan Allan

**P.S. If you have a story and will be unable to come, please, PLEASE, go to Kate Barnes’ website to record your story.
The author is Thomas Lynch, an excerpt below.

“We humans are bound to and identified with the earth, the dirt, the humus out of which our histories and architectures rise — our monuments and memorials, cairns and catacombs, our shelters and cityscapes. This “ground sense,” to borrow William Carlos Williams’s idiom, is at the core of our humanity. And each stone on which we carve our names and dates is an effort to make a human statement about death, memory and belief. Our kind was here. They lived; they died; they made their difference. For the ancient and the modern, the grave is an essential station.

But less so, lately, especially here in the United States, where we whistle past our graveyards and keep our dead at greater distance, consigned to oblivions we seldom visit, estranged and denatured, tidy and Disney-fied memorial parks with names like those of golf courses or megachurches.”
